For the third week in a row, Alabama ranked one spot behind Texas in the College Football Playoff top 25 rankings. The Crimson Tide were eighth, the Longhorns seventh, just like it’s been in each iteration of the rankings this season.
It makes sense, UT beat the Tide when it visited Bryant-Denny Stadium in Week 2. But since then, Alabama pulled itself together and has gone undefeated through SEC play, while Texas faltered against Oklahoma. China Tamping Rammerm
On Tuesday after the rankings were unveiled CFP selection committee chair Boo Corrigan was asked how the committee weighed the head-to-head matchup as the Crimson Tide has continued to improve.
“Two really good teams,” Corrigan said. “Alabama has continued to improve, and Jalen Milroe has gotten better each week. As we look at it, the importance of the head-to-head is there, just as conference championships are. But as I think I said on the (rankings TV) show, the debate in the room continues to be strong as we’re going through this and making sure that we’re looking at everything as we gather more information.
Corrigan also pointed out a key returnee for Texas at quarterback. And even though Alabama has gotten better, that September game still happened.
“The teams are different,” Corrigan said. “Texas has Quinn Ewers back after being gone for a couple weeks. We’ll continue to look at it, but head-to-head certainly is important.”
The issue could work itself out before it becomes a major problem for the committee. Alabama closes the regular season with a home game against Chattanooga before a trip to Auburn for the Iron Bowl and an SEC championship game date with a Georgia team that took over the No. 1 ranking Tuesday.
Texas faces Iowa State and Texas Tech. The Big 12 championship game features the top two teams in the conference, and the Longhorns can clinch a spot Saturday by beating the Cyclones.
